Quantile Measures Parent Guide

What is the Quantile Framework for Mathematics?

The Quantile Framework for Mathematics uses the same scale to measure your child’s mathematical ability and the difficulty of the math materials they encounter. Quantile measures will help you find math skills and concepts that are at your child’s level. A Quantile measure is represented by a number followed by a “Q” such as “800Q”.

How Can I Use My Child’s Quantile Measure?

The Quantile Framework defines more than 550 mathematics skills and concepts. Each concept has a Quantile measure. Each measure shows how difficult one skill is in relation to the others.

Quantile measures range from below 0Q to above 1400Q and span the skills and concepts taught from kindergarten through high school.

As a parent, you can use Quantile measures to:

  • Match materials to your child’s skill level to reinforce the concepts they are learning at school using Math Resources.
  • Monitor your child’s progress over time with the Quantile Growth Planner tool.
  • Help your child become a confident mathematical thinker.

How Can I Support My Child’s Math Skill Growth At Home?

There are nearly 4,000 free resources to support your child’s math skill growth, available on the Lexile & Quantile Hub. Combined with a positive growth mindset about math, you can put your child on the road to becoming a mathematical thinker.

Help your child foster a positive attitude about math.

  • Don’t let on if math wasn’t your favorite subject in school!

Ask if your child has math homework that night, then discuss it when they have finished.

  • Ask how they arrived at an answer. Having them explain their path to the answer helps deepen their understanding.

Ask your child to identify and discuss the math they find in their world.

  • Measurement occurs in food preparation, woodworking, distance, and many other things. For example: When cooking, talk about 1 cup and 1/2 cup measures, and practice measuring.
  • Patterns of all kinds are everywhere: numbers, shapes, etc.
  • Let your child estimate the weight of items in the produce section at the grocery store. Then let them check their estimate with the scale.

Pose mental math problems during downtime (riding in a vehicle, waiting at the doctor’s office, before bed, etc.). Ask your child to:

  • Count by different amounts: 3, 6, 7, 9, etc.
  • For older children, ask them to describe a situation with an equation or expression, including identifying the known and unknown quantities.
  • Recite memorized math facts: 3 + 4, 12-7, 6 x 4, etc.
  • Talk about time: How long until…? How long since…?

If you notice your child is struggling, check in with their teacher!
